i always thought that if you installed the restricted extras in ubuntu the DVD would work, well it doesn’t im afraid because of some shitty rules in the US you have to do a couple of things
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
may need a reboot but shold just be able to open dvd with VLC after this 🙂
