if you have the ubuntu edition of the dell xps sputnik and have upgraded your kernel and now your screen brightness doesnt work correctly then here is a quick work around to have a bright screen instead of a dim screen !
get a terminal up and run this
echo 0 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
